Double Refined base oils are extracted from used oil, by subjecting the used oil to the same processes used to extract base oil from geological crude oils. Hence the term double refined - refined once from crude oil and refined again from used oil. Provided the re-refining is done correctly, following processes similar to those used in a conventional refinery, the base oils produced are as good if not superior to virgin oils, providing exceptional thermal stability, low temperature flow properties and consistency.

Good news for your warranty...

Re-refined lubricants must pass the same cold start, pumpability, rust, corrosion, engine wear, high temperature oil thickening, deposit and phosphorous tests that virgin oils do. The normal OEM Warranty will be supported provided you use oils which comply with the service requirements specified in the equipment handbook or relevant OEM publications.

Vehicle and engine manufacturers such as Ford, GM, Chrysler, Mercedes Benz, Caterpillar, Cummins and Detroit Diesel have all gone on record to state that using certified re-refined oil does not affect warranty coverage. Detroit Diesel even specify a preference for re-refined oil due to its superior consistency.

“Detroit Diesel favors the recycling of waste oil and permits the use of rerefined oils in all engine product lines, provided the rerefined oil meets the SAE Viscosity and API specifications previously mentioned. Several processes are used to rerefine oil. The only true rerefining process is one which treats the used oil as a crude oil, subjecting it to the same refinery processes normally used for geological crude, such as dehydration, vacuum distillation and hydrogenation. Waste oil provides a more consistent feedstock, compared to the geological crudes that a refinery typically processes. As a result, the finished oil should also be consistent in properties and quality." Detroit Diesel Fluid Handbook, 2004 & 2005.
