Extended Responsibility

Everyone is familiar with recycling paper, aluminium, plastic and glass but you may not be familiar with the effort EnviroOil and partner organisations, in conjunction with the Australian Government, are making in the re-refining of lubrication oil.

Just one litre of used oil can contaminate one million litres of water, not to mention that used oil also contains components hazardous to health. The proper disposal and re-use of used oil is critical to preserving our environment and valuable petroleum reserves.

In July 2000 the Australian Government passed the Product Stewardship (Oil) Act and the supporting regulations known as the PSO program.

The broad objectives behind the PSO Program are to

· Ensure the sustainable management, recovery and reuse of used oil.

· Ensure that producers assume the costs of product stewardship and environmentally sustainable practices for used oil

· Increase the recovery rate of used oil to avoid environmental damage

· Ensure products manufactured from used oil meet Commonwealth Environmental Health Standards.

The most sustainable use of used lubricating oil is to re-refine the used oil back to base oil, then re-blend it with additives and re-use it as a lubricant. This is known as lube-to-lube.
